Why Garage Door Cables Break or Fail

Garage door cables are calibrated to maintain enough tension after each operation. There are many cases where this setting can lose tension or you can experience your garage door cable broke on one side.

Obstructions on one Side of your Garage Door

As your garage door opens and closes, there may be something either on the tracks, garage wall, or on the floor on one side of your garage door.

This will interrupt the evenly and balanced operation giving one of the cables enough slack to jump over the drum loosing spring tension completely on said side.

Weak Spring Winding

Your garage door spring wind and unwind as your door raises and lowers. Cables and spring should be calibrated to match the size and weigh of your door. If the springs don’t have enough winds, when the opener pulls the door up there may be slack and not tension on the cable. Where there is not enough pull the, you will how the garage door cable came off both sides.

You can check this when your door is completely open and you notice the cable looping over the drum instead of being taut. If this is the case, when the Liftmaster garage door opener pushes the door down to close, your cable will jump of the grooves on the drum.

Complete Cable Unwinding

In some cases, garage door cables have been known to completely unwind from the drum. This may happen if one of the cables snap such as the case when they rust at the bottom of your door and break from all the pull from the springs and the weigh of the door like an old rope that is holding or pulling something heavy.

Damaged Cable Pulley

Damaged pulleys can cause road bumps in your cable’s moving operations. When the pulleys do not operate smoothly, the door will often become stuck or rest unevenly. If its possible check your door pulleys and look if they are tilted or severe damage in the very middle of such pulley.

If the door makes a grinding sound when operated, there is a good chance your pulleys lost the little ball bearings inside.

Broken Cable

Garage door cables can break due to a number of factors, with age being a top contributor to failure. Rust and fraying can also work to weaken your cables, causing an unexpected break.

Rust Not a Kind Friend to any Garage Door Cable

If your garage door shows signs of rust at the bottom on the door, there is a high change the cables are also rusted. Over time the cables lose part of the threads after being exposed to rust.

The bottom corners of your garage door are the link between the entire door and the spring lifting system. The cable are the only thing pulling the whole weight of your door as you open. If the cable has been exposed long enough to rust, the cable will snap and cause a major disfunction.

Follow these steps to replace your garage door cables:

  1. Unplug and disengage the garage door opener by pulling on the emergency release handle. This should be a red rope with handle that is located near the opener or the top rail depending on your opener. This allows you to open and close the door manually.
  2. Open up the door and use a vice grip just below the bottom garage door roller on both sides to hold the door open while you change the cables.
  3. Go to the center of your door and loosen the sets screws on the springs with 1/4 turns. Remember to fully insert winding bars and use both bars at the same time to prevent injury. Do not get in the way of the bars.
  4. Continue to unwind the garage door spring until all of the tension has been removed. If your door has two springs, do the same with the second spring
  5. After all of the tension has been removed from the springs, take your wrench and begin to loosen set screws on the cable drum at the top left of the door, then remove cable from cable drum. Towards the bottom the of the door, take your ratchet and socket of appropriate size and remove the bottom lag screw from the jamb bracket. Remove the bottom bracket, then remove the cable from the bracket.

  1. Install new cable onto bottom bracket, thread this cable up to the cable drum at the top of the door. Remember to do this for both sides of doors.

After these steps have been completed, you can now increase the tension on the springs using your winding bars, remembering to only increase tension at ¼ turns at a time to not over wind springs.
  4. Remove the locking pliers from metal rod at the top of the door and re-engage the door by pulling down emergency release and lifting door until you hear it double click into place. Once done, you can plug the opener back in. source: garagedoornation.com
